Description: The Ian McLaren Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 and supports students undertaking an undergraduate programme in Education at the University of Waikato. Professor McLaren was a long serving staff member in Education and was instrumental in establishing both the three-year teachingprogramme and later the Bachelor of Education (BEd). He also took a lead role in the amalgamation of Hamilton Teachers’ College with The University of Waikato. Professor McLaren was awarded Professor Emeritus in 1993. One Scholarship is available each year.The funds are held in trust by the University of Waikato Foundation and the Scholarship will be offered until such time as the funds are depleted, approximately 2025.The Scholarship provides financial assistance to an undergraduate student who can clearly articulate how their aspirations and interests relate to broader education and future-focused society.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must:
1. be enrolled full-time (a full academic year comprises of 120-points), in the second or
consecutive year of an undergraduate programme, in the Division of Education at the
University of Waikato in the year of tenure;
2. have achieved a minimum GPA average of B+ calculated on the last 120-points;
3. be involved in community and extracurricular activities, as well as have career
aspirations and an interest in education and its relationship to society; and
4. have not previously received this Scholarship.
5. The application must be endorsed by the relevant Programme Leader.
6. The Scholarship is open to NZ Citizens, NZ Permanent Resident, NZ Resident Class Visa holder, or Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident domiciled in NZ, and international students.However, International students must have completed at least 120-points study at the University of Waikato.
