1. Aronga | Purpose

This scholarship recognises and supports international students with strong academic abilities from Southeast Asia who are beginning their educational journey in New Zealand at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

2. Paearu māraurau | Eligibility criteria

2.1 Applicants must be new full-fee paying international students intending to enrol in either an undergraduate or a postgraduate1 programme at the University.

2.2 Applicants must be citizens of Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand or Vietnam.

2.3 Applicants must have a current and valid conditional or unconditional offer to study an eligible programme.

2.4 Applicants cannot be previous University of Canterbury students. This includes those who are applying for a high-level programme (e.g. bachelor’s degree graduate applying for a master’s programme).

3. Tukanga tononga | Application process

Applications must be made online at the Scholarships website1 by 15 November for Semester 1 2025 and 16 May for Semester 2 2025.

4. Tukanga kōwhiringa | Selection process

4.1 The scholarship is awarded by Te Kaunihera | University Council on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising:

a. the Director of Recruitment (or nominee);

b. the International Recruitment and Conversion Manager (or nominee) and

c. the International Market Manager (Southeast Asia) (or nominee).

5. Paearu kōwhiringa | Selection criteria

5.1 In making the recommendations, the selection committee gives consideration to:

a. student’s academic achievement;

b. strategic objectives of the University.

5.2 The selection committee may consider distribution amongst students in such a way that diversity of recipients with regard to their UC faculties, schools, departments, and programmes is supported.

5.3 If, in any year, there are fewer candidates of sufficient merit than scholarships available, fewer scholarships are offered.

6. Mahere utu | Value and payment schedule

6.1 The scholarship provides tuition fee assistance at a value of $5,000 for undergraduate programmes and $10,000 for postgraduate programmes.

6.2 The scholarship is paid directly to a recipient’s University fees account.

7. Paearu here | Tenability and retention criteria

7.1 The scholarship must be taken up in the semester for which it is awarded.

7.2 The scholarship is tenable in the first year of full-time study in a programme for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

7.3 The scholarship is tenable for one year.

7.4 By accepting the award, recipients indicate that they are willing to agree to appropriate publicity requests from the University of Canterbury to represent the university and the scholarship.

7.5 Upon being offered, recipients have 14 days to accept their scholarship offer of place.

7.6 Recipients with a valid conditional offer of place must make a reasonable effort to meet the English Language condition (if any) of their conditional offer within one month of accepting the scholarship.

7.7 This scholarship cannot be held concurrently with the UC International First Year Scholarship.

7.8 This scholarship cannot be held by students who studies are being fully sponsored by either a home government or the New Zealand Government

7.9 The scholarship may be withdrawn, and any paid funds may be recovered if, during tenure, the recipient does not:

a. maintain an enrolment that meets the conditions specified in clause 7.2;

b. maintain satisfactory academic engagement; and

c. adhere to the University’s statutes, regulations, policies, and rules2.
